Curbing Corruption in Nigeria: It’s Up to You & I!

Today, I read the disturbing news that Nigeria has been ranked the 144th most corrupt country in the world.

The report – Transparency International Corruption Perceptions Index 2013 – serves as a reminder that the abuse of power, secret dealings and bribery continue to ravage societies around the world.

Why do I have the need to share this, you might ask.

It's Up To Us

Many times, we think that only the elected government officials are corrupt and make such statistics so outrageous. What we fail to realise is that curbing corruption and presenting our country’s image in a positive way is our collective responsibiltiy, everyone!

It’s a typical Nigerian mentality for us to blame others for our problems, but this must stop. Young people can play a vital role in bringing greater transparency into governance and making the Government more accountable; ordinary people can play their own part by avoiding all forms of bribery and corruption and encouraging others to do so.

I believe corruption will only reduce in Nigeria when each individual realizes that he is part of the corrupt system and stops his own corrupt actions.

Let’s stop blaming others and do our own part. A better Nigeria is up to You & I!

xoxo
