Talk To Steph: I don’t want to change my name

Talk To Steph

Q: My fiancé has become adamant about me taking his last name after we’re married. I can’t believe this is even a conversation in 2014. Don’t all modern married women keep their names? I don’t want to change my name, so what do I do?” –G.D.

If you actually want to be like the majority of modern women, that would mean that you change your last name to his. Recently, wedding juggernaut the Knot surveyed 19,000 married women about their surnames and found that just 8 percent elected to keep their names.

If you want him to consider backing down again, you’re going to need to come up with a better reason than “Everyone else is doing it, so I should, too.” Make it logical. What are the “professional reasons” you mention for keeping your name, and how will your bottom line be affected if you take on his name?

SL Fabz, what do you think? What is your take on this situation?

Women of nowadays eh! Why won’t u change U̶̲̥̅̊я name? Offices, schools, public etc make out space for u to change U̶̲̥̅̊я once u are married, I’ll quite understand it if we’re talking about phone number here which I personally won’t change even in marriage. Pls D̲̅ε̲̣̣̣ǎ̜̣̍®, there’s no excuse for U̶̲̥̅̊я decision, if other societal ladies husbands allow them, U̶̲̥̅̊я own societal husband says NO & his decision stands cos he’s a man of integrity. Why not add his name to urs ie Stephanie Okereke then his name(Linus). Abi the guy name funny?ignore it cos ℓ̊Ƨ̷̜̩̌̋ his pride.

Interesting,in islamic point of view if it is allow here, there is nothing wrongn in you keeping your name after marriage provided you allow the kids to bear their father full name without uteration, you don’t also have to be a modern woman before you can keep your name my lady, just need to work on your presentation so that there will not be any fight between you and your husband. Well done steph.
