Do You Believe In Nigeria?

Nigerian GirlI read without surprise a recent news report that says Nigerians are among the ‘Top Eight Races that Excel in the United States of America’.

A Yale professor Amy Chua and her husband Jed Rubenfeld in a recent book pointed out that some groups in America are inherently more likely to succeed than others pointing at the ease with which Nigerians earn doctoral degrees.

They eight are: Chinese, Jewish, Indian, Iranian, Lebanese-Americans, Nigerians, Cuban exiles and Mormons.

‘That certain groups do much better in America than others, as measured by income, occupational status, test scores and so on, is difficult to talk about,’ Amy and Jed write.

This is some refreshing news in the midst of all the negativity and demeaning reports about Nigerians living abroad. But I wasn’t surprised about the news because I’ve always believed in Nigeria. Despite any negative stereotypes against Nigerian people, especially youths, I believe we are highly talented, resourceful, innovative, hardworking and resilient people. I believe the time has come for higher expectations, for common goals pursued together, for an increased political will to address our common future.

Nigeria has so much potential and it is time we start to harness them by taking the right steps in the right direction. There is so much that can be achieved only if we collectively resolve to do the right things to move our nation forward.

How about you? What do you think we must do as a nation? Despite all the negativity surrounding us, do you still believe in Nigeria?

xoxo
