A white shirt earns its space in a wardrobe when you can wear it on an ordinary Tuesday as easily as to dinner. It need not be oversized, expensive or perfectly crisp. The useful question is whether it fits the way you live: can you sit comfortably, move your arms and wear it without constantly adjusting the buttons?

Start with the shirt you have
Check the fabric in daylight, particularly if it is sheer. Try it with the underwear you intend to wear and move around before judging the fit. A shirt that pulls across the chest may work better worn open over a camisole. If the sleeves are awkwardly long, fold them neatly rather than letting the cuffs swallow your hands.
With straight-leg denim

Tuck the shirt into jeans, add a belt if you like one, and choose flats or sandals. Leave the neckline as open or closed as feels comfortable. The interest comes from the proportions: a loose shirt against straighter denim, or a neater shirt with wider jeans. You do not need to add a statement piece to make this work.
With a printed skirt

Let the print carry the outfit. Try a full tuck to define the waist, then check how the shirt sits from the side. A softer shirt may tuck more easily than a stiff one. Choose one colour from the skirt for a bag or earrings if you want a connection between the pieces.
With tailored trousers

For a meeting or lunch, pair the shirt with trousers that fall cleanly over your shoes. Try the whole outfit while seated, not only standing in front of a mirror. A small bag and simple jewellery can finish it. In warm weather, consider whether you actually need a jacket.
Worn open over a simple base

Wear the shirt over a fitted tank and trousers or a plain dress. This is useful when you want a light layer that is easy to remove. Keep the base simple enough that the open shirt feels intentional, and check that its length works with the garment beneath it.
Dressed for dinner

Try a satin-look or textured skirt, a favourite pair of earrings and shoes you can comfortably walk in. You can knot the shirt at the waist if the fabric allows it, or tuck it loosely. Either way, check that the hem stays where you want it when you move.
Make one change at a time
Photograph two or three combinations on your phone. Often the better outfit needs a different tuck or shoe rather than another purchase. Which piece in your wardrobe would you pair with a white shirt first?
